THE HUB & SPOKEMARCH 2023

|
Kudos and thanks go out to John Rossignol and helper Quinn, who together spent countless hours and cut through over 1000 trees to restore access to the Beck Trail (near Murray River) this winter after extensive damage from Fiona! Thanks to John and Quinn, the Red Loop is once again accessible for bikers and hikers, and they’ve already started tackling the Blue Loop, too!

Getting ready for Cycling Season!
|
It’s officially spring, and even if it’s too early to take off those fat tires just yet, this is the time to start planning for the cycling season ahead. Following are some ways you can grab that bike by its handlebars!
|
#1: Get your 2023 Cycling PEI Membership!
|
All Cycling PEI membership types, including UCI licenses, are available to purchase now at www.cyclingpei.org/membership. As we mentioned in the last edition of the Hub & Spoke, we are pleased to be able to offer a couple of new optional insurance add-ons to your membership this year. The Training Accident Insurance ($20) extends the same personal accident coverage you enjoy at CPEI-sanctioned events and club rides to anytime you’re on your bike for training/exercise purposes this year. The 24-hour Bike Accident Insurance ($100) ensures that you are covered for up to $25,000 in the event of accidental injury that occurs anytime while riding your bike. Both insurance add-ons take immediate effect once you have purchased them, and are good until the end of the 2023! See more details of the insurance coverage here.

#2: Get Ready for Rigid Riders!

#5. Become a Commissaire!Commissaires are race officials who play an important role in maintaining safety, fair play, and ensuring that races operate in accordance with provincial and national standards. You can train to be a commissaire by taking online courses and learning from experienced commissaires at races, and there are special courses for both Road and Mountain Biking disciplines. Commissaires earn honoraria for helping out at CPEI-sanctioned races. If you would be interested in learning to become a Commissaire and making an important contribution to the sport of cycling, please let us know by writing to commissaires@cyclingpei.org.

#6. Train to become a HopOn Instructor!
|
HopOn is a games-based cycling program that teaches school-aged kids across Canada the joys of cycling safely. Cycling PEI will be offering this program in school (primarily grades 3-6) and community settings (for kids aged 6-16) for the first time in 2023. Learn more about HopOn at hoponcanada.ca.
We are seeking new HopOn instructors, with a particular emphasis on those with daytime availability who could help deliver this program to school classes. HopOn Instructors are paid for their work, and Cycling PEI covers all training costs. Please contact us at info@cyclingpei.org to learn more!

There’s been lots happening on the Active Transportation front this month! On Monday, SAFE Summerside presented its AT Network proposal to Summerside City Council. According to SAFE, the room was so packed they had to get more chairs out of storage! Councillors asked lots of questions and expressed a lot of support for the plan, which, if it wishes to proceed, it will add to the Committee of the Whole Agenda in two weeks time, and at such time Council could make a request to the City Staff to work towards an Official AT Network Plan.
Cycling PEI was pleased to provide a letter of support for SAFE Summerside’s proposal, which you can view here. Just days before, on March 17th, Bike Friendly Communities presented its vision of an Active Transportation Network for the Capital Region at its “Bike Friendly Future Info Session” at Beaconsfield Carriage House. In case you missed that event, you can view a recording of the presentation on their Facebook page, here.
